San Francisco: Chace 1997

This remodel of a San Francisco Victorian opens the south-facing back of the house to its own and adjoining gardens. It plays on the counterpoin between traditional and contemporary elements. A Tuscan column marks the corner of an open, stainless steel and cherry kitchen. The custom-designed island functions as a serving table and bar, mediating between kitchen and den.

The general contractor was Curt Smith.

Open kitchen: open to the den and dining room, open to the gardens on three sides. A Tuscan column marks the corner, the island lightly separates the kitchen from dining room and den.
   
A gas ventilating fireplace is framed by a traditional but simple cast stone surround. French Beaumaniere limestone completes the trim and hearth. The counter is in stainless steel with integral sinks.
   
The island has a sandblasted glass countertop floating above a bar storage cabinet. Stainless steel fabrication by CW Ironworks. Curved cabinet by Franck Daude of Etagere.
