The ceiling of the dining room opens up to a row of ventilating skylights, bringing natural light and amplitude to this central space.
  
A thorough remodel of a house in the Napa Valley - most of the interior was gutted - reconfiguring the relationship between kitchen, dining and living rooms within a great room. The dining room occupies the space of the former kitchen, opening onto a deck, patio and backyard beyond. The kitchen island and cabinets, in figured ash, are treated as sculptural elements against a background of multi-colored slate tiles.
  
Built-in cabinetry within a thick wall creates a display, storage and entertainment area. The walls and ceiling are finished with integral color plaster.
     
  
The fireplace surround consists of slate slabs with steel plate trim and hearth. The traditional mantle was adapted from the original fireplace.The general contractor was Simon Fairweather, Fairweather Associates
